Madklubben

Directed by Barbara Topsøe-Rothenborg

Synopsis

Three longtime girlfriends from elementary school, very different women, have one thing in common: they are in the fall of their lives and they all feel how ruthless old age can be. Marie is abandoned by her husband on Christmas Eve, and her entire identity as part of a happy family crumbles. Berling is the eternal "bachelor" who outwardly denies her age and lives the sweet life, but in the backdrop she is affected by a complicated relationship with her daughter. Vanja lives in the memories of her late husband and has difficulty moving on. The three travel to Italy together to attend a food course in Puglia, where they each have an opportunity to redefine themselves.

Aaahhh so happy to find this unexpectedly on Tubi. I've been wanting to see this since last year, but knowing it's Danish, all hope was lost.

Thank you, Tubi!! I love you!!

The movie has food and Italy, how can't I say no?
It's also about women supporting women. I also love seeing older women having the time of their lives.

The story is super predictable. I was wondering what if Hollywood remakes it. Marie would be played by Diane Keaton and Berling by Goldie Hawn.
It bears a striking 'vibe' with the First Wives Club haha.

A pleasant surprise when Marie says Batik in Bali xD
Wow much wow me likey ♡

the kind of movie were you didn't have to think a single thought to understand it which was actually kind of nice

I'm convinced Danish cinema has a subscription to this Italian resort and we'll make one movie per year down there. We get it for free, so long as we advertise food, location and a sexy signore.

Sweet movie for elderly people. But it still looks like sh*t, smells like sh*t and taste like sh*t.

This is for old women, and I'm not one.
But I liked it. And I giggled.
    Now I feel ashamed.

  • Review by Andreas Jensen ★★½

A cute 'fish-out of-water' feel good story for your parents and grandparents to enjoy.

I must admit I had to watch it for an exam. I'm not exactly in the target audience, so an older demographic might get way more out of the film than I did. The films is based on extensive market research, which revealed there's not really being made films for older people in Denmark. The filmmakers went out interviewing hundreds of mature women to create the story and characters we see on screen. "The Food Club" is neither good, nor bad. It just exits in that void with a thousand other films you've seen, that you've forgotten soon after. It's cinematic language is based on many other romantic comedies, which makes this a very predictable, yet still a nice time.

A fun watch, but it feels very hard to ignore the depressing reality that cashgrabbing capitalist hounds spawned this film into existence.

  • Review by Niels Harpøth ★★

Klicheerne er til at kløjes i og Madklubben bliver hverken rigtig sjov eller rigtig rørende. Den er en letfordøjelig affære, det filmiske svar på den slags charterrejse, dens målgruppe kunne finde på at købe.
