It’s not every day you see purple coffee! If you’ve seen the Dunkin Sugarplum Macchiato all over social media and want to try it, you can now… at home.

I made my own copycat version of it using real fruit to give the macchiato that eye catching purple. Is it my favorite coffee drink I’ve ever made? No. And I probably won’t make it again, but it tastes fine, like a regular vanilla flavored macchiato but with a slight blackberry flavor.

So if you’ve ever wanted to make purple coffee, here’s my Dunkin Sugarplum Macchiato recipe.

What is a Macchiato?

There are actually two types of macchiatos. One is the espresso macchiato. This is a shot of espresso with just a touch of foamed milk in it.

The second, which may be more familiar since you’ll find this in most mainstream cafes like Starbucks and of course Dunkin, is the latte macchiato.

The latte macchiato is substantially larger than the espresso macchiato. In the latte macchiato, there’s much more milk and it typically looks layered. This is due to which liquid you pour first, giving it the effect of the milk on the bottom with the espresso on top.

This Sugarplum Macchiato from Dunkin is a latte macchiato.

What is a Dunkin Sugarplum Macchiato?

Dunkin Sugarplum Macchiato is Dunkin’s seasonal holiday drink. According to their website, it “features bright berry flavors of blueberry, raspberry, blackberry, and plum, accented by notes of vanilla and rounded out with a sweet sugary finish for the ultimate winter delight.”

It contains espresso, milk and the sugarplum flavor, which gives the drink it’s purple color layer.

It has been a hit on social media (do you follow us on TikTok yet?!) and I will say it definitely looks cool. But the flavor might not be a favorite for everyone…

In my copycat Dunkin Sugarplum Macchiato recipe, I used real blackberries and blueberries to give the macchiato a natural purple hue.

Tips for Making a Dunkin Sugarplum Macchiato

Espresso

I used a moka pot to brew coffee.

If you do not have an espresso machine at home, the moka pot is a great alternative that’s easy to use and inexpensive. It brews a concentrated, espresso like coffee so this is what I recommend using if you don’t have an espresso machine.

Check out our guide to brewing espresso without an espresso machine for other brewing methods you can use. The goal is to brew concentrated coffee.

Also, to mimic a coffee drink you’d actually get at Dunkin, consider using a Dunkin coffee like their Original Blend.

Berries

I used blackberries and blueberries.

The Dunkin Sugarplum Macchiatao features blueberry, raspberry, blackberry and plum. I’m unsure if this is from real fruit but in our copycat recipe, we’ll use real ones for a natural color.

Milk

I used almond milk. Feel free to use your favorite milk or milk alternative.

Vanilla Syrup

I used Monin Vanilla Syrup.

Apparently the Dunkin drink is “rounded out with a sweet sugary finish” so I chose to use vanilla syrup to give the macchiato the sugary finish. When blending the milk with berries and adding the syrup, taste it and if you prefer it a little sweeter, add more vanilla syrup.
