How fully history question layout? ›

In this question, you have to pick out 2 or 3 points that the source tells us about the topic in question. You then need to comment on what the source misses out. The first step to answering this question is identifying the relevant points that are mentioned in the source.

Each section (essay) is worth 22 marks and requires an introduction for historical context and a conclusion.

You will need to identify a key point from a historical issue and provide a relevant explanation in answer to the question e.g. think about using a point of recall and link this with as/because which will then encourage you to provide a relevant explanation linked to answering the question.

You should plan these points beforehand, and format each paragraph with the 'PEEL' (point, evidence, explain, link) structure so that you are: making it clear what your point is; providing relevant historical evidence to support this, in relation to the given statement; analysing how this agrees/disagrees with the ...

When answering a 7 mark question it is important to remember to give three well explained points. So find a point in the source, then develop it making sure you pull information from the source not just from your knowledge of the topic.

A - is the highest grade you can receive on an assignment, and it's between 90% and 100% B - is still a pretty good grade! This is an above-average score, between 80% and 89% C - this is a grade that rests right in the middle.

You should make a point, back it up with evidence, then explain what this evidence shows. For top marks you need to evaluate these points, but show that your argument is stronger. Finally, finish with a conclusion. This is where you summarise your argument without adding any new points, and give a final answer.

Essay paragraphs

A Higher History essay must have at least 3 paragraphs but 4 paragraphs is good practice. Overall there is a total of 16 marks available across the essay paragraphs. Try to use the same technique/structure for each paragraph. Identify a factor and link it to the question.

Go through the whole specification and select a few topics or sections where you feel like ou may lose marks on. Read this bit quickly and pick out the key points. Try to summarise the key event in three bullet points and memorise that. You'll find the content much quicker to learn since it's condensed.

Your answer requires a clear judgement e.g. '… explains to an extent'. Source points selected (quote directly from the source or paraphrase) should be supported by a detailed explanation clearly linked to the question.

To answer this question you need to analyse evidence that both agrees and disagrees with the statement. You then need to add a well-substantiated conclusion. You are expected to show wide-ranging knowledge to answer this question. Keep linking back to the question by using the keywords.

Either way, each paragraph should be structured as follows: a topic sentence which outlines the paragraph's answer to the question, and a following sentence to clarify its relevance. You will then delve further into this point, providing examples and relevant explanations, which all link back to the question.
