70-acre (28-hectare) campus in Phoenix, Ariz. The only four-year Christian liberal arts university in the state, Grand Canyon University was founded in 1949 and is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. Students are required to take religion classes and attend chapel services. They also must reside on campus through their sophom*ore year unless they are over the age of 20 or live with relatives. The university has apartment-style housing for interested married and upper-class students. About a third of the undergraduates are over the age of 25. Enrollment is roughly 1,700 students, including more than 100 graduate students. Women outnumber men, and most students are state residents.
The university awards bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and classes are conducted on the semester system. Many of the faculty are part-time. Undergraduate programs are offered by the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Communications and Fine Arts, and Nursing. A five-year engineering program is available in conjunction with Arizona State University. Grand Canyon University has many study-abroad opportunities, including programs in the Commonwealth of Independent States, Hungary, and China. The university has graduate programs in education and business management and administrative services.
Extracurricular activities at the university include a drama group, choir, the student-run newspaper, and intramural sports. Most varsity sports teams compete in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, with the baseball team participating in Division I competition.
