Did all the farmers leave the Southern Plains during the Dust Bowl? How many left? No, but most did. Over 2.5 million people moved out of the Plains and 200,000 moved to California.
What were the dust storms called? Black Blizzards
Describe what it was like to experience a dust storm. It was basically like experiencing a Blizzard except instead of snow it dirt.
What did the people spit out? Dirt
What did people believe was happening when they were experiencing a dust storm? People thought that they were experiencing the end of the world they experienced a dust storm.
How were the farming conditions in 1931 compared to the rest of the country? conditions in 1931 were better in the Southern Plains than in the rest of the country.
What was the land and soil like before farmers plowed it? The land was green and lush, and the soil was extremely rich like chocolate.
What didn’t the farmers know about the land when they started to move to the southern plains? The farmers didn’t realize that they were witnessing only a brief moment in an endless cycle of rain and drought. Their constant plowing and planting also stripped the land of its nutrients.
What drew the farmers to the Southern Plains? The farmers were promised a heaven on earth. Advertisem*nts put out said that the Southern Plains had beautiful lands and the people were encouraged to believe that this was the Garden of Eden. They were also paid well for farming wheat.
What did Washington want from farmers? Why? Wheat for World War I
What came to the fields in the 20’s? Tractors and Farmers
How many acres a day could a horse plow? 3
How many acres a day could a tractor plow? 50
What happened to the fields when the rains stopped? Dried up and dust formed.
What did the Red Cross do? Handed out dust masks.
How many acres became waste land? One hundred million
How many dust storms were there in 1932, in 1933? 1932=141933=38
How did people protect themselves and their houses from the dust? They hung wet sheets in front of doors and windows, stuffed rags in windows and cracks.
What did the Government do to help the farmers? Offered relief through Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal
What did the government do to the cattle, Why? Bought and destroyed cattle because the livestock feed depleted.
In 1935, what problem did farmers face? The land was destroyed by jack rabbits that were starving.
What were rabbit drives, explain? The men would go out, hunt jack rabbits, and kill them because there were to many of them.
Describe Black Sunday. April 14, 1935. It was the worst day of the Dust Storm; the people thought that God's wrath was on them for killing the jack rabbits.
Where did people turn for moral support? The Bible
What epidemic hit the plains? The Dust Pneumonia
What were some home remedies? Skunk grease, sugar and turpentine, kerosene and lard.
Why did some farmers begin to head West? There had been no rainfall for 4 years. They went in search of farm jobs in California.
What happened to the banks, businesses and churches? Banks and businesses failed and churches were boarded up.
Who was John McCarty? The editor of the Dow Hart Newspaper who started the Last Man's Club.
What was the Last Man’s Club? Issued the call to arms which was meant to build up courage. The men in the club pledged to stay and do anything to help others.
What solution did Tex Thorton propose? That they use explosion to excite the atmosphere and induce rain.
What did Hugh Bennett try to teach farmers? The Father of Soil Conservation.
What did Hugh Bennett try to tell Washington? That conservation techniques could restore farming in the Southern Plains.
Why did he stall when he was presenting in Washington? Because the Dust Storm was approaching Washington D.C.; the Congressmen would be able to see what the farmers in the Southern plains were going through.
What did the Easterners get? to experience what it was like for the Southern Plain farmers; they could smell, breathe, and taste the dust.
What did most people think about soil? That the soil was limitless, full of nutrients, and that it could not be destroyed.
Describe the film that was created that promoted conservation of soil. "The Plow that Broke the Plains" paid Melt White's Dad to play a farmer breaking up the soil; the film showed the farmer's farming practices to be the reason why the soil was would not grow anything.
What did Washington finally do about the problem? He paid farmers to use conservation methods.
Plowing was no longer done to plants, what was the purpose of plowing? To dig up the soil so that it was easier to plant different things.
What were the results of the conservation efforts? The dust blowing and storms reduced by 65% but the drought continued.
When it finally did rain, how did the farmers feel? The farmers felt extreme happiness. They were very emotional and had hope that there would be crops.
