Gas engines were developed at the end of the 19th century and became commonplace on motorcycles as they were manufactured at the start of the 20th century. Recently, however, a new type of engine has come to the forefront: the electric engine. Electric bikes differ from gas bikes in many ways, so it’s important to know these differences before you land on the right option for you.
Noise
Motorcycles can be loud; there’s no doubt about that. Typically, this is due to the loud gas-powered engine and its various machinations to produce sufficient power for the motorcycle to move forward. If you’re worried about adding to noise pollution, an electric motorcycle may be the way to go. Electric bikes tend to operate almost silently, without any engine turn-over noise.
Emissions
Obviously, electric motorcycles do not produce any emissions whatsoever. There is no gasoline moving through them that requires an exhaust, so they are the most carbon-neutral, environmentally friendly choice. Gas motorcycles do produce exhaust and while it’s less than a standard car or truck would produce, it’s still a concern.
Maintenance
Gas motorcycles require quite a bit of maintenance to keep their engines performing at their best. Electric motorcycles, however, are run on a battery that is pretty low-maintenance, which means you save money on repairs and don’t have to keep your bike in the shop for days on end.
